Summer Camps 2018!

Tech Camps: Tuning into the Universe | Grades 6–8
SESSION 1: June 19–22 | 1–5 pm
SESSION 2: June 26–29 | 1–5 pm
$200 ($225 after May 1st)

You've heard the rumors and seen the realities: drones really do deliver at Yerkes! What 30 years ago would have been labeled a UFO is what you just got for Christmas: a drone. Never have awesome selfies, deliveries of online orders, search and rescue, flying races and aerial stunts been so exciting! On the downside, drones also crash into people's houses, threaten privacy, and get lost in original ways. Drones come with some pretty neat features, but we can hack them to be even more entertaining and functional. We'll also teach how students how to do the fun stuff responsibly, without hurting or damaging the drone. Come join us as we hack our way through the summer at Yerkes Observatory!

Yerkes Astrophysics Academy for Young Scientists (YAAYS)

It's time to explore the universe! This summer, we'll be building the tools we need to probe the depths of space. Come learn, explore, build, and create alongside professional astronomers, scientists, and engineers engaged in active research.

YAAYS began under a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a way to foster learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) topics through extracurricular activities in astronomy and astrophysics.

 Makerspace: Telescope | Grades 3-4
July 16–18 • l–5 pm • $110 ($140 after May 1) FULL
JUST ADDED July 24 - 26 1-5pm - $110 ($140 after May1)

Construct your own telescope and take it home! Astronomy and technology blend together in this Makerspace Camp specifically designed to encourage elementary school students to explore, express, inquire, and create. In this camp, students will learn about lenses and optics and use both hand and power tools to build their own telescope from the ground up. Students will use their telescopes at night during their star party to learn basic night-time sky navigation and identification of planets and stars.

Mission: Underdome Drone | Grades 5-6
FULL:July 10–13 • l -5 pm • $150 ($180 after May 1)

Campers get ready! Yerkes is launching a spacecraft to a mystery location within the observatory, and students will build and operate their own mission spacecraft. Teams of student scientists will participate in a four-day challenge to explore this remote location with the goal of uncovering secrets. Many challenges await participants, who will create a flight plan, retrieve samples, and analyze pictures from their probe. The first step will be learning how space scientists use probes and remotely operated vehicles over cast distances in the solar system to make amazing discoveries.
